Boston Construction Starts 2016 with a Boom

Boston construction is off to a roaring start in 2016, according to Dodge Data & Analytics, a New York-based construction research firm. The following numbers are compiled using information from industry leads and and building permits for the Boston, Cambridge, and Quincy metropolitan area.

The results show that residential construction starts rose to $487.8 million in projects compared to $257.2 million in 2015. This represents an impressive 90% increase from last January. Non-residential construction starts had a more modest increase of 18%, or a jump to $354.5 million from the $299.4 million in the last year.

Two larger non-residential projects in this list are:

  • A $141.2 million office building and garage at Pier 4, located at 190-210 Pier Four Blvd. in Boston.
  • A $30 million life science building at 113-115 Hartwell Ave. in Lexington.

The following three represent a few of the larger residential projects in the area:

  • A $93.1 million mixed-use project at 96-120 Beverly St. and 86 N. Washington St., or Parcel 1B, in Boston’s Bulfinch Triangle.
  • A $55 million apartment complex at 81 Cunningham Road in Boxborough.
  • A $50 million mixed-use development with parking garage at 122-148 Border St. in East Boston.
